Memorial Scholarship & Scholarship Funds

The Baraga Township Lions Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for Baraga Area School youth who are entering post high school fields of education, with preference given to vocational trades or other industrial training.

The Norman Londo Scholarship was established in memory of Norman Londo to provide scholarships to graduates of the L’Anse Area Schools who are in financial need of educational training beyond high school.

The Helen Harju Miller Scholarship  was established to provide scholarships to graduates of Baraga County Schools who are entering the fields of either medicine or elementary education, and who are working to support themselves throughout their education.

The Hugo Castilla Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Dr. Hugo Castilla providing a scholarship  to graduates of Baraga County Schools who will be entering field of pre-med with the purpose of becoming a medical doctor, and financial need is not a pre-requisite of this award.

The Stark Family Memorial Scholarship was originally established as the Ray Stark Memorial Scholarship and provides scholarships to Baraga County School students who will be attending the Concordia Language Village to study  the Finnish or German language and has awarded scholarships for studies in related fields.

The Aino S. Hill Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships to Baraga County School students pursuing higher education who have a music background or who will be enrolling in a college or university school of music, or who will be enrolling in a college or university and majoring in education.

The Buckland Marvin Memorial Book Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Buckland to provide for the necessary costs of books and supplies to graduates of Baraga High School who have been accepted at a college or university for 2 to 4 year study, with preference given to Native American females who hold a high school G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.

The Robert Reed Memorial Scholarship / BHS Class of ’43 was established by the classmates of Robert Reed in his memory to provide a higher education scholarship to graduates of Baraga High School with selection based primarily upon financial need for those students maintaining a high school G.P.A of 3.0 or better.

The Elizabeth Moyer Shelden Scholarship Fund was established in honor of her many contributions as an educator in Baraga County, and for the purpose providing scholarship to graduates of Baraga County Schools who are entering the field of Education with a G. P. A. of 3.0 or higher.

The Catherine Van Erp Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for graduating women of Baraga County Schools who are pursuing studies in the fields of mathematics, science, or engineering.

The Borghild Heltunen Nurses Scholarship was established by local area nurses to provide scholarships to graduates of L’Anse Area Schools who have completed a semester at a university or college in a nursing program while maintaining a C average grade or higher.

The Ponnistus Athletic Scholarship award was established for the purpose of assisting youth countywide with funding for sports camps attendance and is open to all county youth with an emphasis on those students who may not have the necessary financial resources.

The Ina McClintock Been & Olof Been Scholarship award was established to assist gifted students graduating from Baraga County Schools with a GPA of 3.5 or higher,  who are entering the fields of mathematics or physics and who demonstrate a critical financial need for the scholarship support.

The Denise Marth Memorial Scholarship award was established to assist gifted students graduating from Baraga County Schools who are entering health related fields of study and show financial need.

Ken Summers Scholarship award was established to assist gifted students graduating from L’Anse High School who exhibit exceptional leadership abilities and who are independent in forming opinions, ideas and in decision making. Financial need should be taken into consideration

Mello and Ann Supanich Fish Scholarship award was established to provide scholarships to Baraga County graduates in consecutive Junior/Senior university attendance scholarships for students majoring in nursing, teaching/education, or political science and related fields, while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher in those years.

L’Anse Achievement Award Scholarship was established to provide three annual awards that recognize Graduates of L’Anse High School exhibiting outstanding citizenship, caring attitude, academic achievement, and having post high-school goals, entering each the fields of study of Engineering, Medical, and Vocational/Craftsman.
